Stafford and Stone SSP win inaugural National Award

Top Activity was launched in 2005 and is a programme of 'alternative' sport and physical activities designed for use in the informal out-of-hours club setting. It has been developed by the Youth Sport Trust, though the support of Sainsbury's Active Kids and appeals to those young people aged 7-13 who may not currently access sport and recreational activities through the more traditional routes.

The Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership have used Top Activity in many areas including MEND, Active Plus, Active Families, Cluster festivals and primary school clubs.

Eleven various representatives from the Partnership attended an awards day at Sainsbury's headquarters, hosted by Youth Sport Trust Chair, Baroness Sue Campbell.  DJ and Danielle Roberts (participants of a MEND programme) were also invited on stage to have a question and answer session with Double Olympic Champion - Dame Kelly Holmes.

This was the first year that Sainsbury's and the Youth Sport Trust have held the awards event and the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership beat off many competitors to claim victory in the "Families" category.  The winning position sees the partnership receive 10,000 Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers, 5 Top Activity bags and half a day's training at a PGL Centre.

Partnership Ambassadors

Steve Glover, Assistant Partnership Development Manager for Stafford and Stone, was delighted with the award.  "We are so proud to receive this accolade but acknowledge it is an award that has come from strong partnership work involving schools, Staffordshire County Council, our relationship with the Primary Care Trust and other key agencies.  I have been privileged to see pupils take part in Top Activity programmes through MEND and Active Plus and continue on with confidence to join new sporting clubs."

Top Activity has always been one of many tools used by the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership to engage pupils in sport and physical activity and this also has resulted in the partnership recently being named a "Hub of Excellence" for the programme.
