Girls Active

In 2008, the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership became one of only seven  Girls Active Regional Centres in the country.

Girls Active in Stafford and Stone has been designed to empower teenage girls to enjoy sporting activity on their own terms, make positive choices and to be given a voice.  It has been and is all about enabling young females to make a positive contribution to their schools.

Girls active

Girls have been challenged to come up with ideas on what they could change in their own schools in order to make sporting activity something they want to participate in.

Since commencement in 2008, a variety of work has been done through Girls Active in Stafford and Stone.
Girls have delivered presentations & assemblies, helped redesign changing rooms, set up notice boards, changed PE kit, assisted with festivals and much more.

All schools and the School Sport Partnership have signed up to a Girls Active Pledge.

This year has seen many of the Girls Active groups involved in Active Plus (physical activity sessions for inactive young people) and more recently a large number took part in Race For Life.

Over the past three years, the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership has held regional Girls Active Days twice a year.  The aim of these days is for girls to experience a range of none traditional activities and inspire them to take ideas back to their own schools.

Steve and Gail Emms

Each event attracts over 200 girls from many schools throughout the Midlands. Activities include Skateboarding, Street Dance, Ultimate Frisbee, Kangoos, Army Assault Course, X bikes, and Cheerleading.

Dame Kelly Holmes has been guest of honour at two of these events and the Youth Sport Trust continues to support by providing Female Athlete Mentors.

In July, 2011 Over 100 girls descended upon Stafford Sports College for a Midlands regional Girls Active event today. The day organised by the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership saw girls from all over the region enjoy a variety of activities including Mountain Biking, Climbing, Cheerleading, Trampolining, Badminton and Soccer Aerobics.

Gail Emms, Olympic Silver Medallist and local Olympian (Sydney 2000) Kerri Lees supported the girls in all activities.

The day started with Steve Glover, Partnership Development Manager challenging girls to drive participation in sport in their own and neighbouring schools. Gail Emms

Girls thoroughly enjoyed all activities and felt totally motivated to enthuse girls in their own schools. One such girl is moving to Scotland in the near future and stated her ambition was to form a Girls Active group in her new school.

Gail and Kerri were a huge inspiration to all girls and offered advice and tips to all throughout the day.

Following the activities all girls (including Gail and Kerri) joined a further 100 girls plus many more to complete the Race for Life in Stafford. The 5k race saw many dressed in pink enjoy a inspirational occasion. Gail and Kerri even managed to finish in the top ten places and one of the local girls finish in fourth place!
